Perhaps nothing is scarier to a child than playing a contact sport like football and going up against a against a much, much bigger player. Pop Warner football is aware that matching up players who aren't of similar size may be asking for trouble--be it injuries or just a frightening scenario that might turn children away from football. While it seems complicated on the surface, the intent is to make sure that teams playing against each other are of similar age and size. Each division has both an age range and a weight range that players must fall within. However, recognizing that young kids will grow, a player may gain one pound per week after the second game, up to a maximum of nine pounds.
American Youth Football AYF or Pee Wee Football was established back in the 90s with the aim of promoting the development of young players under the guidance of their partners in the adult leagues. Over the years the Pee Wee Football league gained popularity and due to this, it is firmly established throughout the 50 states of the USA along with 6 other countries. AYF is known to accept participants without any prejudice due to their financial standing. To aid in the development of the young players the AYF provides them financial grants, Nike sponsored shoes and development of pitches by partnering with FieldTurf. Only the player who performs well in their class is allowed to participate.
It depends on the rules of your league. Pop Warner has age and weight classes that range from Tiny Mite 5,6,7 through Bantam up to 16yo. However, not all leagues play in the Pop Warner system. It all depends on the league you are looking at. The best thing to do is to contact your local league to find out.
